Setting S.M.A.R.T. Goals for Business Success

Specific Goals Will Keep You Productive

Daydreaming about being able to work for yourself is very different from having a specific plan of action. These action plans are created in line with the goals that you hope to achieve.

Without them, you will be wandering aimlessly on a day-to-day basis trying to pick and choose from the countless different tasks an online entrepreneur needs to accomplish. Just because you are sitting at your computer and logged into your website or social network accounts where you have contacts that are in this business, it doesn’t mean that you are actually being productive with your online career.

In the SMART Goals Framework, the S stands for specific. Simply saying that you want to work for yourself is not a specific goal. Saying that you want to set up a work at home business and earn enough so that you can quit your day job, is more specific.

It allows you to understand what it will take in order for you to cross this goal off your list. You will be able to list all of the elements that would make this goal real. You’d be specific and avoid vague language like, “I want to make money online.”

You need to look at why you want to make money online (so you can raise your kids, to reduce stress, earn more, etc.), what you will need to do in order to make that happen, and how your schedule and routines will need to be altered from this point on.

Many people say things like, “I want to work from home.” When you say something like this, it leaves the field too wide open for you to engage in behaviors that actually detract from your productivity.

You might consider downloading a dozen courses on the subject of “working from home.” And technically, you might be right. However, allowing yourself to indulge in Shiny Object Syndrome, without actually making progress in your business, can derail your journey and cause weeks, months, even years of stagnant behavior.

Whenever you set a goal for yourself, try to be as specific as possible. For example, you might have a goal to spend one hour per day distraction-free for blog content creation. Or, you might set a productivity goal that is very specific for writing and publishing your own information product.
